Repeatability and Additional Calibration of a Segmental Body Fluid Monitoring Device 2001-01-2183

NTE has developed a system (BFM 7Scan) that provides information on fluid distribution and composition both for body and body segments (legs, arms, thorax, abdomen and head). The system consists of a electronics box controlled with a PC with a dedicated software. The system has an applied part with 11 electrodes that are located on subject’s skin. Using the electrical impedance spectroscopy technology, the system provides the following information:
  • Total Body Water content for each segment and for whole body
  • Extracelullar and Intracellular Water content for each segment and for whole body
  • Fat Mass and Lean body mass
NTE has followed with the collaboration of the Olympic Training Center (CAR) in Barcelona (Spain) a refinement of that calibration and characterisation of the system. These activities were as follows:
  • Assessment on the influence in the measurement due to repositioning of thorax electrode.
  • Assessment on the influence of type of electrode used.
  • Assessment of repeatability in the measurement.
Additional work is being performed presently on:
  • Refinement of calibration on fluid content and composition using Magnetic Resonance Imaging as alternative method.
The results of these activities help to demonstrate together with previous work performed that the system BFM 7 Scan can be used to study the body fluid shifts that the astronaut suffer during stay in weightlessness.
