Process Simulation of Superplastic Forming of Titanium Structure 2001-01-2624

Superplastic Forming and Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB) of titanium structures enables the manufacture of highly efficient unitised structures. Single piece components can be formed which conventionally would have to be fabricated from a large number of components.
Successful forming depends upon good design, process control, and understanding of the forming process. In particular it is necessary to form at an appropriate strain rate. This is controlled by a Pressure Time Cycle which for simple low strain components can be derived by iteration. Process Simulation by Finite Element analysis is required for more complex components.
The development of the process simulation tool SNAP (Superplastic Numerical Analysis Package) is discussed along with material forming characteristics and applications.
