GES Driving Conflict Identification for the IVI Generation 0 Field Operational Tests 2001-01-2819

Estimation of the possible safety benefits of the intelligent vehicle safety systems (IVSS) deployed as part of the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) Generation 0 Field Operational Tests (FOTs) requires identification of relevant crash types, and predominant driving conflicts from population crash statistics. The National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) General Estimates System (GES) served as a suitable resource for this task.
Four major heavy truck crash categories were identified and will be examined under the current FOTs. They are: rear-end, untripped rollovers, single vehicle roadway departures, and lane change/merge crashes. For each crash category, the critical event leading to a truck’s involvement in the crash and the movement of the truck just prior to that event were used to construct the list of predominant driving conflicts that will be identified in the FOT and used for safety benefits estimation.
