Enabling Technology’s Promise-Collaborative Development of Common Requirements for Mobile Information and Entertainment Systems 2002-21-0001

The Automotive Multimedia Interface Collaboration, or AMI-C, is a global, non-profit corporation formed by vehicle manufacturers. AMI-C is working with contributing suppliers and standards organizations to develop and standardize requirements for Mobile Information and Entertainment Systems with a focus on Telematics and Multimedia technologies. In 2002, AMI-C will deliver on its promise of Architectural requirements and interface specifications for Bluetooth hands-free phones, on-board Telematics host platforms, and 1394 Automotive and MOST-based in-vehicle networks. This paper discusses the characteristics of the automotive environment, standards development methodologies and organizations, AMI-C’s goals, history, and approach to standardization and the role it is playing in technological evolution through collaborative development among the consumer electronics and automotive industries.
