India 2000 Emission Norms and Fuel Economy Opportunity for Lubricant Technology in Small Two Stroke Engines 2003-26-0002

Two - stroke engine technology is at critical stage, due to significantly high emission generation. Most of efforts have been, in recent past, on engine technology development to reduce these pollutants and meet with stringent emission norms. During year 2000, regulations of emission standards in India has also given a challenge to both engine and lubricant technology. As such there is no lubricating oil specification in the market that offers suitability for complying emission norms and compatible with catalyst converter (fitted as part of exhaust system). A strong need for such lubricant leading to combination of catalyst compatibility coupled with environmental benefits, high performance including fuel economy is felt. This paper includes development of new lubricant formulation for 2-stroke engines, which is capable of controlling pollutants in exhaust gases providing catalyst durability evaluation up to 30000 km and delivering fuel economy benefits of more than 5%. It is expected to give benefit to consumers and society at large.
