Development of FIPG for Magnesium Alloys 2004-01-1037

Formed-in-place gaskets (FIPG), also known as liquid packing, are widely used to seal flange mating faces in automotive engines and transmissions. This paper focuses on room-temperature vulcanized (R.T.V.) silicone FIPGs. While current FIPG formulations function effectively with aluminum alloys, it is not possible to guarantee the adhesion of conventional FIPG with magnesium alloys without prior surface treatment. The factors behind this reduced adhesion were therefore analyzed, leading to the development of a new adhesion promoter to improve adhesion, and the reformulation of mixing ratios for the base polymer and basic filler. This has enabled the development of an FIPG displaying excellent adhesion with magnesium alloys with no prior surface treatment.
