Electronic Diesel Control – A Strategy for Euro 3 Optimization 2004-28-0025

The stringent emission norms and customer demands on driving comfort, performance etc have made the role of fuel injection equipment much more important. The stringent demands placed on the fuel injection systems are,
  • Flexible control of fuel injection system to meet the engine requirements at all times
  • Ability to process the influence of additional parameters
  • Sensitive control
  • Fine tolerances and increased accuracy even after long periods of operation
These demands can be fulfilled only by Electronic Diesel Control systems.
For electronic systems to play a major role in diesel control, the following requirements have to be met,
  • High precision and reproducibility
  • High safety
  • Wide working temperature range
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Vibration resistance
  • Interference suppression
  • Long working life
During the first decade, diesel technology was concentrated on improving performance and reducing fuel consumption. Today the focus is on stringent requirement regarding environmental compatibility. In the last ten years BOSCH has developed new high-pressure fuel injection systems for truck engines as well as passenger cars. The new electronic controlled injection systems with precise control of injection quantity and timing, along with a highly developed engine management system have made this rapid development possible.
This paper deals with a development of an electronic fuel injection system for a DI engine to meet Euro-3 norms in the commercial vehicle range. Results from developments with 2 different engines are presented. Also this paper brings out the strategy for meeting stringent emissions for Heavy commercial vehicle application with
  • BOSCH electronic diesel control system with various hydraulic variables and
  • Engine modification to improve emission levels
