Torque Vectoring Driveline: SUV-based Demonstrator and Practical Actuation Technologies 2005-01-0553

An SUV vehicle has been fitted with a novel torque vectoring driveline system capable of distributing drive torque in controllable proportion between the front and rear axles. The vehicle has been tested and is shown to function as anticipated with the ability to markedly alter the handling characteristics. The influence upon vehicle dynamics are reported as is the effectiveness of a yaw rate control scheme.
Beyond the demonstrator vehicle, designs are discussed for driveline devices for both longitudinal and lateral torque distribution using the same principles but product-orientated actuation with initial design calculations as proof-of-concept. Uniquely, arrangements are shown that achieve bi-directional torque bias capability from a single brake-type actuator.
Further actuation research is also described that relates to a novel combined clutch and valve arrangement that achieves closed loop torque feedback by mechanical means alone. A wider review applies novel magneto-rheological actuation methods for related dynamic control applied to a snowmobile.
