Analysis and Simulation of Conventional Transit Bus Energy Loss and Hybrid Transit Bus Energy Saving 2005-01-1173

Hybrid vehicle offers much potential in fuel economy [1, 2]. Firstly, the energy loss of a conventional transit bus was analyzed in the typical city drive cycles and simulation study was done in idling, braking and engine work efficiency. Results show that fuel consumed in idling and braking was much high and engine part-load efficiency was very low. Then, the potential performance enhancement of hybrid transit bus in the above three aspects was analyzed by reasoning and simulation. And the fuel economy was compared with that for conventional transit bus. Comparison shows that the hybrid transit bus can reduce fuel consumption by 30-60 percent in these city cycles.
