Radiation Passive Shield Analysis and Design for Space Applications 2005-01-2835

We analyze passive radiation shield designs and techniques intended primarily for space applications, such as capsules, orbital space stations, space colonies, and scientific satellites carrying radiation sensitive instruments. The analysis determines the shield geometry in direct relation to the distributions of intra- and extra-galactic radiation sources.
We present I) A thorough discussion of the proposed passive shield designs. II) A detailed analysis of shielding solutions that are based on knowledge of radiation source distribution in outer space. III) An optimization analysis of the shield, to insuring a safe level of radiation, while keeping the volume, hence the mass of the shield at a minimum.
