An Investigation of A Natural-Gas-Fueled Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engine for High-Performance Co-Generation Systems 2005-32-0005

In order to develop a natural-gas-fueled HCCI engine for a high-performance co-generation system, a 0.86 liter single-cylinder engine with a flat-type piston was tested by altering the intake air temperature, the charging efficiency, the compression ratio and the swirl ratio. In addition, the effect of the combustion chamber geometry using dog-dish type pistons was investigated by altering the ratio of the chamber diameter in the piston crown to the piston diameter, namely the diameter ratio. Of these parameters, the compression ratio is the most effective parameter in promoting the engine performance. The optimum compression ratio exists for thermal efficiency.
