Lightweight low cost solution for Footrest for two-wheelers application 2005-32-0063

This Paper describes new design concept of composite Footrest, which is a structural load carrying part in two-wheelers. Glass fibre Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) is used for special grade Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) for design & development. The paper demonstrates the benefits of use of composites for primary structural two-wheeler parts for improved performance through optimized designs & weight reduction. The example of Footrest development is considered to substantiate the claim of weight saving and cost reduction. Design approach for material & process selection, tool development is explained. Detail FEA has been carried out to evaluate the design options. Key issues of customer's concern for painting & recyclability are discussed briefly.
