New Nonwoven Media for Engine Intake Air Filtration with Improved Performances 2006-01-0276

New requirements of automotive engine manufacturers have given the focus on the development of new engine intake air filtration media. Reduced space under the hood, longer service life intervals, new motor designs and improved sensor protection require new engine air filter media with improved filtration quality.
Today cellulose based filter materials are used for most automotive engine intake air filtration projects. For the next generation of engines new types of filter materials have to show higher filter life time with improved filtration efficiencies and the opportunity for smaller filter elements. Also the aging behaviour and a high thermal stability of the media are of interest.
This paper discusses the opportunities of a new nonwoven media in comparison to existing materials like paper and foam. It shows a new environmental friendly nonwoven process for a 100% synthetic filter media and highlights on ISO 5011 comparative testing as well as results from field tests.
