Multi-beam Lidar Sensor for Active Safety Applications 2006-01-0347

This paper describes a multi-beam infrared sensor technology (IDIS®) with unprecedented robustness to environmental influences, which was originally designed for the comfort application Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The paper shows that beside ACC an optimal functionality for safety applications such as Precrash and Collision Mitigation can be provided by the IDIS® sensor, which has a good lateral resolution by principle and can clearly identify width and outlines of vehicles and road obstacles, a feature which is extremely important for these applications.
An outlook is also given on data fusion aspects between this Lidar sensor and camera systems, which further improve functionality and availability of the safety functions.
