Advances in Diesel Engine Combustion: Split Combustion 2007-01-0178

This paper describes a new Combustion System called “Split Combustion” (SC). It was derived from various strategies for a Homogeneous Diesel Combustion (HDC) to reduce nitric oxides (NOX) and particulate matter (PM) within a greater load range.
Before explaining the strategy for the SC the limitations of the HDC, examined in simulations and experiments, are reported, followed by the results of the experimental investigations. Finally the potential of the SC is estimated.
