In the past 50 years, ice has played a role in numerous accidents that have killed crews and passengers [

], and destroyed aircraft. No phase of operations is immune to the threat. An US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) study, on icing related accidents between 1982 and 2000, found that 819 people were killed on 583 airframe icing accidents during the same period. The accidents included in the NTSB study, were all related to both FAR Part 23 and FAR Part 25 aircraft.
CIRA (Italian Aerospace Research Center) has expressed the need for continuing research and development of new technological improvements on basic and applied research through the design and development of the large scale Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT) [

]. The CIRA IWT, which has entered into service in September 2002, is one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced icing facility.
This paper describes the icing tests campaign performed for the A400M including engineering, model description, and procedures used to accommodate costumers requirement. Test campaign has been committed by the Belgium Company SONACA, leader in providing leading-edge technologies up to the world's highest standard, and partner of major aerospace industries for development, certification and fabrication of advanced aerospace structures.
In the frame of a R&D program SONACA asked CIRA the possibility to execute about 30 icing tests, plus a number of aerodynamic run for proper model setting, on a 2D full scale wing section of the A400M, in order to evaluate the compliance of a new de-icing system developed by SONACA it self. Finally also a dedicated SLD calibration check has been required for performing SLD test on the model. Test campaign lasted about two months, split in three parts including SLD calibration and model testing, over the years 2005 and 2006.
