Methodology for Optimizing the Aerodynamic Performance of the Time Attack Series Cobb Tuning Subaru WRX 2006 Using Mesh Deformation Techniques 2007-01-3875

This paper seeks to describe the methodology for optimizing the aerodynamic performance of the Cobb Tuning Subaru WRX 2006 which runs in the Time Attack Series using mesh deformation techniques. A goal was set to increase the overall downforce of the vehicle without excessively increasing drag and improve the overall aerodynamic balance. Very few rules govern the bodywork for the Time Attack Series so it has been possible to try a large variation in components. The effect of adding the CFD developed components to the vehicle has been to increase downforce by almost 26 times when it is at 180kph, yaw whilst adding less than 26% of drag. The final aerodynamic balance of the vehicle should be reasonably close to the centre of gravity.
