Automotive Component Performance Prediction: Evaluating Component Nondestructive Test Methods in Terms of Correlation to Failure Test Results 2008-01-0847

On the basis of the case studies presented, standard NDT does not relate well to performance based on performance data sampling of automotive parts. Measurements demonstrate that processes for automotive parts tested may allow for a wide variance in performance results. In cases addressed below, the measured Capability Indices for performance were 0.41 or less. Although Capability Indices for fit (dimensions and features) may be high, the apparent variation of parameters affecting structural performance should require 100% performance correlated nondestructive testing (NDT) to ensure structural integrity. This NDT should specifically correlate with performance with sensitivity over the full range of defects that affect performance in the entire component.
