Abstract:
In SAE Paper 2006-01-3580 entitled, “Digital Brake Stroke Sensor”, the author described development and initial laboratory test results of a digital brake stroke sensor used on commercial vehicle pneumatic foundation brakes. The sensor monitors the pushrod stroke of the brake chamber and transmits the information over SAE J1708 to the driver via an in-cab display and to the fleet manager via cellular communication. This paper, part two of a three paper series, addresses the performance of and results from a subsequent field operational test of the system conducted in Lexington, Kentucky and Buffalo, New York. Topics to be presented include a system overview, fleet description, field operational test synopsis, system reliability and data captured during the field operational test.
