Pass-by Noise - A Survey into the New Procedure 2012-36-0623

The society demands for less pollution, in the particular case of the automotive industry, which is related to the emitted noise from vehicles, there is an international effort led by UN ECE-51 to define a more realistic method for measuring noise emitted by vehicles in the urban environment.
As part of this effort, there are 03 procedures under discussion: Pass-by noise test and cruise test at 50 km/h;
ASEP - Additional Sound Emission Provision and;
AVAS - Audible Vehicle Alerting System for BEV / HEV
Among these, the procedure more nearly mature and ready to become a new standard is the first one - Pass-by noise test and test cruise at 50 km/h. If this one be compared with the current measurement procedure (ISO-362) there are significant changes.
The objective of this paper is to stimulate the discussion of the proposed new method, as well as, and especially show the challenges involved with the implementing of the new methodology, from performance of the test itself to the report of the results.
From the proposed new method, which is known as ISO 362 - Method B, Ford South America has been making measurements of their M1 / N1 vehicles.
The impact of the changes in the test results, and lessons learned will be shared, as well as, the vision of the new control limits and their probable date of the introduction.
