New combustion and Powertrain Control Technologies for simultaneously Achieving Fun-to-Drive Dynamic Performance and Better Fuel Economy

Abstract:
Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new engine frame structure on purpose of improvement of the thermal efficiency and specific power with high speed combustion concept and renovated engine line-up as Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) engine series to comply with customer's needs for both fun-to-drive and better fuel economy. This new engine realized maximum engine thermal efficiency of 40%, specific power ratio of 60kW/l and reduced exhaust gas emission by high-speed combustion with high compression ratio, a high tumble intake port, high energy ignition coil, high pressure multi hole nozzle direct injector and new electrical VVT. As a top runner of the TNGA engine series, new 4 cylinder 2.5L gasoline naturally aspirated engine are installed into passenger car with new TNGA 8th speed Automatic Transmission introduced already for Mini-Van and SUV in 2016 to US market. The TNGA powertrain system realized the top class of the low fuel consumption, in addition, realized direct & smooth driving feeling and continuous acceleration feeling on the ordinary driving scene by combining with new driving force demand control system and setting vehicle G behavior target.
