Ratcheting One-Way Clutches in Torque Converters

Abstract:
This paper discusses a new development in one way clutches (OWC), ratcheting OWC in torque converters. While this has been tried before, and been successful in niche applications, it has not been successful in mass production. The efficiency of ratcheting OWC is better than friction type OWC. Ratcheting OWC have less rotating inertia than friction OWC. Ratcheting OWC offer acceptable backlash, and NVH performance, compared to friction type OWC. The stresses in ratcheting OWC are much lower than friction type OWC. The manufacturing of ratchet OWC is simpler and more robust than friction OWC. For these reasons, Ford Motor Company is working to implement ratcheting OWC into all of their torque converters, replacing friction type OWC.
