Multi-objective optimization of two stage spur gearbox using NSGA-II

Abstract:
Gearbox design is a very complicated and highly specialized task. Gearbox plays an important role in the system of power transmission. It finds its application in various machines, such as stationary engines, bicycles, cars, windmills, etc. Minimum weight and high-efficiency gearboxes with the good service life is the prime necessity of today’s high-performance power transmission systems such as automotive and aerospace. To achieve these objectives, optimum gearbox parameters should be calculated. Hence, this problem to optimize the gearboxes is subjected to a considerable amount of interest. To accomplish these objectives, in this paper, two generalized objective functions for two stage spur-gearbox are formulated, first one is for minimum volume and the second one is to maximize the power transmitted by the gearbox considering regular mechanical as well as the tribological constraints (Scuffing and Wear). These objective functions are then optimized to obtain a Pareto front for the two stage gearbox using a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) code written Matlab. Finally, the comparison between the results obtained considering gearbox as a single objective optimization (minimization of volume without tribological constraints) and multi-objective optimization with tribological constraints is presented. From results, it is observed that multi-objectie optimization is more effectie than single objective optimization
