Abstract: A through glass integrated V2X antenna was developed to simplify deployment of Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communications on existing aftermarket vehicles. The 265 million vehicles in existing U.S. fleet ought to be "connected" to each other and new vehicles to realize all benefits of V2X communications technology. The advantages of this V2X antenna are: avoids drilling holes on the roof, eliminates lengthy RF cables and their transmission losses, achieves best-in-class RF performance (omni-directional & high gain), and simplifies installation by adjusting to any windshield angle. The placement of the antenna is crucial for V2X safety applications; therefore, it is intended to place the antenna on the top of the windshield, without obstructing the view of the driver. The antenna is designed for the DSRC frequency range using patch and stacked dipole array antennas. The antenna system comprises of an internal coupler with integrated GNSS antenna, external coupler with stub antenna. The internal coupler, external coupler and stub antenna supports two DSRC antennas for dual radio operation. The antenna design emphasizes maximizing gain, omni-directional polarization, maximizing isolation between the two radio channels, and minimizing insertion losses caused by the windshields, which is a dielectric medium between the internal and external couplers. Impedance matching of the stub antenna's connection to the exterior patch antenna maintains the transmission line impedance and minimizes parasitic coupling on the windshields due to moisture. The antenna's mechanical design incorporates a flexible attachment of the stub to the base to withstand the effects of car washes.
