SYNTHETIC RUBBER APPLICATIONS on Aircraft Engines 440175

LABORATORY testing of synthetic rubber vulcanizates typical of those available for use on aircraft engines revealed that:
  1. 1.
    Synthetic rubber stocks vary greatly both in percentages and rates of weight loss during aging at 212 F.
  2. 2.
    Changes in physical properties of the stocks tested during oil aging are a function of both the temperature of testing and of the aniline point of the oil.
  3. 3.
    Gum extracted by aromatic fuel from synthetic rubber stocks varies with the temperature and, to a much smaller extent, with the length of time of extraction.
  4. 4.
    X-ray diffraction analysis provides a means of identifying some of the polymers and crystalline fillers in a stock, and also yields information regarding the particle size of the fillers present.
