AN INVESTIGATION OF STRUCTURAL CONCEPTS FOR A MACH 3+ SUPERSONIC TRANSPORT WING 630371

Research investigations on structural concepts for a Mach 3+ supersonic transport wing are reported. The vehicle environment and aspects of material selection and structural design as a result of this environment are discussed. Promising structural arrangements are discussed and the results of representative panel and joint tests are presented.
The design, manufacture and testing of a wing box, simulating an integral fuel tank, is reported. Testing of the box includes both thermal and load tests. Thermal tests include transient heating and the measurement of thermal gradients and stresses with the tank empty and full of water. Water temperatures are measured with the tank full and with a prescribed drain schedule. Load tests include measurement of stresses at room temperature and during transient heating with the tank empty and full of water. Testing is in progress and only a partial report of test results is included.
