Crankshafts Should be Broken in the Laboratory Instead of the Engine 640643
The author describes methods used to perform stress analysis on crankshafts. The primary problem is to determine the critical point where greatest stress will occur. Several means used to determine the critical point, as well as techniques used to measure stress at the critical point are outlined.
The measurement of fatigue strength and fatigue testing methods are evaluated. Use of the described methods has reduced the measurement of service stress and fatigue strength of crankshafts to a routine procedure.
