Ground Transportation System for Bradley International Airport 750627
An automatically controlled transit system is being installed at Bradley International Airport. The system has two purposes: demonstration of automatic transit for urban applications, and transportation from a remote parking lot to the airport terminal.
The 0.7 mile guideway includes both at-grade and elevated sections. A 550 ft bypass at the intermediate station simulates an off-line passenger terminal. Provisions for extension of the guideway to serve future facilities have been included.
The two 25 ft long vehicles are each powered by two 60 hp electric motors. An on-board computer controls the operation of the vehicle. The vehicles are air-conditioned and have two-way communication capabilities.
Design of the guideway began in November 1973. Construction of the guideway was begun in July 1974 and was essentially complete in December 1974. The construction was completed in April 1975 when the system was energized and testing begun. Public operation is scheduled to begin in November 1975.
