Use of Expanded AIDS in Engine Health Monitoring on the CF6-80 Engine for the A310 Airbus 841505

This paper describes the General Electric, Aircraft Engine Business Group's involvement in the development and introduction of a condition monitoring system for the CF6-80 engine. The program specifically used to illustrate this work is the CF6-80 engine condition monitoring system for the Airbus A310 application.
The paper concentrates on data acquisition, which is centered around an on-engine Propulsion Multiplexer (PMUX), and on the ground based software, these being the two main areas of General Electric activity. The PMUX and the instrumentation sensor complement are described together with the types of transducers.
The development of the condition monitoring software for the CF6-80 engine on the A310 airplane is a team effort involving General Electric, the airlines (KLM, Lufthansa, and SAS), and Airbus Industries. General Electric has developed the analytic functions and a supporting data base and plot capability, the airlines supplied the software for data editing and configuration management, and the airframer provided the required hardware integration. Each of the functions is described including the on-wing component diagnosis (known as on-wing TEMPER for Turbine Engine Module Performance Estimation Routine).
The paper concludes with a discussion of operational experience as viewed from the user (airline) perspective.
