Because of the predicted increase in the robot population (100,000 by 1990), a closer examination is needed of robot applications currently in use in such areas as assembly, welding, sealing, parts handling, and painting. Specific examples of robot implementation, such as the GM Livonia Trim Plant, are discussed and include robots with a sophisticated vision system.
The advantages of robot applications are discussed, in addition to future technological advances required if the system is to be operated and maintained efficiently and effectively.
