Abstract:
Materials technology represents the heart of any hydraulic system. Unless the materials used have the requisite properties, the hydraulic system designed to utilize those materials has very little chance of operating successfully. This paper describes the materials research and development programs essential to the successful development of a totally nonflammable hydraulic system. Both hydraulic fluid and elastomeric seal development efforts are described. Research to date has successfully developed fluid and seal materials that have −54°C to 135°C temperature capability and proven operational pressure capability up to 27.6 MPa. Additional data are presented on materials development programs directed toward the more ambitious requirements of −54° to 175° C temperature capability and operational pressure capability of 55.2 MPa. While the latter requirements have not yet been met, results are encouraging and operational capability over the more severe requirements will be achieved.
