VOLKSWAGEN'S NEW 1,3 L HIGH PERFORMANCE SI-ENGINE SUPERCHARGED BY THE VW G-LADER 860102
Following the trend of sporty driveability even in the subcompact passenger car segment, a high performance gasoline engine of about 85 kW output for the VW-Polo should be developed. A comparison of different power boosting technologies, i.e. 4 valves per cylinder, turbo-charging and supercharging results in advantages for the supercharger system. The VW-developed supercharger, called “G-Lader” shows good efficiency and excellent durability.
On the basis of a 1,3 1 natural aspirated engine of current production the development of the 1,3 1 “G-Lader” supercharged gasoline engines is described including charge pressure control, piston modifications, optimisation of valve timing and mixture preparation system. Test results show, performance and fuel consumption data comparable to a natural aspirated engine of 40 % increased displacement.
