A Unique Development Method for Microcomputer Controlled Mechanical Clutch and Transmission 860599

Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited have developed and put into operation the first microcomputer-controlled transmission with a mechanical friction clutch. (See SAE 840055.)
Joint development began at the end of 1981. In the autumn of 1984, the project's third generation transmission system, called the New Advanced Vehicle with Intelligence 5 Speeds (NAVI 5), was mounted on an ASSCA, and put on the market.
Due to the Fujitsu development support system, the project was completed in less than three years.
Transmission control systems are evaluated from two standpoints:
The first is the system's reaction when the driver starts the engine or changes gear. The second is fuel consumption (compared to an automatic transmission with a torque converter clutch).
The first requires extensive tests at a proving ground, more than the number required in the development of an engine control system. During these tests, the control strategy (software) must be corrected, based on test results.
To conduct a large number of experiments and to make the required on-site software corrections required the development of a unique support system.
This report describes the development support system which contributed to NAVI 5 development.
