Relative Risk to Car and Light Truck Occupants 871093

The accident experiences of different passenger vehicle classes are compared using 1984 and 1985 Fatal Accident Reporting System and North Carolina accident data and national and North Carolina registration data. Vehicles are classified by body type and weight as small, medium, or large cars, small or standard vans, small or standard pickups, or multipurpose vehicles. Accident involvements, injuries, incapacitating injuries, and fatalities are presented. Injury rates per registered vehicle and per accident involved occupant are calculated. The counts and rates are given for all crashes and for frontal, side, rear, and rollover crashes separately.
