A new era in the provision of aeronautical communication systems has followed the deployment of the two AUSSAT geostationary satellites over Australia. The Department has installed some 96 duplicated satellite ground stations to provide a significant portion of its essential aeronautical safety communications both date and voice, between the existing air traffic control (ATC) and the flight service (FS) units located throughout Australia, and from these units to strategically located VHF air-ground communications outlets.
This paper will briefly examine the Department's role, the limitations of existing aeronautical communications systems and provide an overview of the aeronautical satellite system.
