New Piston Ring Face Coatings Using Design of Experiments 900588

A new piston ring face coating has been developed in an effort to extend the life of internal combustion engines. The molybdenum chromium carbide composition was determined through the use of the Taguchi method, Design of Experiments. Engine tests show the material to have improved piston ring and bore wear resistance over many similar coatings used in production. Comparisons of ring-bore wear data are made from engine tests incorporating hardened and non-hardened bore turbocharged diesel engines. Bench tests provide comparative friction and wear data.
