This paper will discuss the requirements of obtaining success in contracting R&D from outside resources. Keys to success are contained in the STATEMENT OF WORK which describes the task to be undertaken, COMMUNICATION between Client and Contractor, CONTRACTOR EXPERTISE and how it is gaged, TYPES OF CONTRACTS, and SCHEDULING. These issues will be examined from both the Client's and Contractor's viewpoints, and emphasis will be placed on the advantages and disadvantages of the many options which exist in developing and performing Contract R&D.
