Full-Size Pick-Up and Utility Induction System Noise Improvements 942272

This paper addresses the development of a new air induction system which was incorporated in the General Motors full-size trucks (C/K models) to reduce engine induction noise. Originally focused specifically on the 7.4L engine, the improvements were adapted to include all C/K truck gas engine applications.
The new induction system reduced interior induction noise peaks by as much as 15 dB(A) in some applications, and produced an almost immediate customer response in the form of improved customer satisfaction ratings. In addition, the new system eliminated components and allowed common part usage with different engine families.
Combinations of general resonator sound theory, objective noise level testing, and subjective vehicle evaluations were used to develop the new system. The latest design practices were then applied to integrate the system into the C/K trucks.
