Properties and Design of Extruded Magnesium 950427

Structural magnesium parts made by the diecast process have gained a wide acceptance in the automotive industry. Extruding magnesium is another method by which parts may be fabricated advantageously. Presented in this paper is a brief summary of 1) the extrusion process; 2) physical and mechanical properties of extruded magnesium; and 3) general extrusion design information. Potential applications will also be discussed.
