Advanced Thorax Dummy (TAD-50M) Versus Hybrid III: A Characteristic Comparison in Frontal Barrier Testing 950666
This paper describes the evaluation of the thoracic assessment device developed for the advanced anthropomorphic test device and prototyped for the 50th percentile male dummy (TAD-50M) in a barrier crash test environment. The advanced thorax has been integrated with the Hybrid III head, neck, pelvis*, and upper and lower extremities. The test series consisted of four frontal barrier tests: two at 48 kph and two at 56 kph, with a driver side airbag restraint system, and a driver and passenger 3-point seat belt restraint system. Data from the TAD-50M are presented in conjunction with the differences in response characteristics between the TAD-50M and the Hybrid III.
Two objectives of the testing were to understand the new thoracic system and to examine the durability from the standpoint of an end user. The new thoracic displacement measurement devices provide more information in the TAD-50M. As far as durability, even with the exposure to four barrier tests, the TAD-50M did not experience any permanent setting of the seven ribs.
