Abstract:
An ADAMS simulation of a 10 litre DI TC intercooled engine and ancillaries has been created and validated against engine test data. This model has been used to determine the rattle sensitivities to various parameters in the front end gear timing drive using a rattle intensity factor based on instantaneous bearing forces. Large changes to the inertias of idlers and ancillary drives had little effect on rattle, whereas realistic loading of the alternator had the effect of reducing the rattle intensity. In general, loading of meshes by constant torque devices such as the water pump and alternator, can eliminate the rattle across those meshes.
