Development of a New Metal Belt CVT for High Torque Engines 2000-01-0829

Based on the technology of the 2.0-liter class CVTs(1), JATCO Trans Technology (JTT) has undertaken the development of a new metal belt CVT targeting a torque capacity of 350Nm for FWD use. JTT has so far evaluated by experiment the performance of a vehicle that combines this high-torque metal-belt CVT with a V6 3.0-liter engine.
In this paper, we report on the main specifications and basic configuration of this 350Nm class CVT. We also compare a vehicle using this CVT with vehicles using step-ratio 4-speed and step-ratio 5-speed automatic transmissions (ATs) in terms of fuel consumption, power performance, and drop in engine revolutions at same driving mode, which are considered strong points of CVT.
