Series Application of a Diesel Particulate Filter with a Ceria-Based Fuel-Borne Catalyst: Preliminary Conclusions after One Year of Service 2002-01-0436

In May 2000, PSA Peugeot Citroën launched, the Peugeot 607 HDi (High pressure Direct Injection) luxury sedan, the first series-production diesel passenger vehicle equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The elimination of diesel particulate emissions is achieved by sequential trapping followed by regeneration of the DPF, assisted by a Ceria-based Fuel-Borne Catalyst (Ceria-FBC).
In order to ensure reliable and durable DPF regeneration under all driving conditions, including the most demanding such as prolonged periods of idling and low speed driving, active and integrated system approaches are used. This technology was subsequently transferred to the diesel versions of the Peugeot 406 and the newly-launched Peugeot 307 and Citroën C5.
This paper presents the functional and technical characteristics of the Ceria-FBC to fulfil specification requirements. These characteristics have been developed and adapted for:
  1. 1.
    optimal vehicle integration;
  2. 2.
    requirements for health and environmental friendliness;
  3. 3.
    compatibility with filter materials and vehicle components;
  4. 4.
    long-term solubility and stability in diesel fuel;
  5. 5.
    temperature and time stability;
  6. 6.
    thermal evolution of viscosity compatible with typical automatic on-board dosing systems;
  7. 7.
    final customer acceptance;
  8. 8.
    sulfur tolerance.
After more than one year of commercialization, feedback from the 100,000 + HDi vehicles in the field shows that the DPF demonstrates:
  • exceptionally high and durable filtration efficiency;
  • excellent regeneration behavior;
  • highly reliable and precise functioning of the Ceria-FBC on-board dosing system.
These results have been confirmed by the German Automobile Club (ADAC) and the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) through joint evaluation over 80,000km of the Peugeot 607 HDi: the main conclusions are also reported in this paper.
