Theoretical Study of Combustion Intensification in SI Piston Engines 2002-01-1742

The Toyota TGP (Turbulence Generating Pot) concept is one of the attempts to create a lean-burn combustion system, developed some time ago and is supposed to stimulate the combustion in a homogeneous charge SI piston engines. Several years ago, an alternative solution was proposed called JDC (Jet Dispersed Combustion). Its action was similar in nature to that of the Toyota TGP system but here the action of the prechamber was substituted by the action of the gas jet introduced into the conventional, undivided combustion chamber from the outside during a suitable time. An extensive experimental study of the JDC system with the use of the combustion bomb, the research and the actual engines, have demonstrated surprisingly high effectiveness of this method of combustion stimulation.
The theoretical analysis of the JDC system performed using the multidimensional computer code KIVA3V is presented in this paper. Results presented in this analysis confirm the conclusions drawn from the experimental part of the work and further allow highlighting some details of the combustion mechanism in that type of the system. Special attention was paid to the influence of the direction of the stimulating combustion gas jet.
