Light Weight Systems: The Role of Sound Barriers 2003-01-1516

Recent trends in interior noise control, driven in part by mass reduction needs, have led to increased reliance on absorption alone as the control method of choice.
A logical exposition is presented, describing the continuing need for sound barrier systems. The insufficiency of either treatment approach by itself is discussed, and argument is presented for balance and control of both direct and reflected sound.
The issue of sound barrier mass is addressed. Opportunities exist for lighter weight barriers to replace traditional heavy materials. Appropriate mass, as defined by acoustical function, must be the guide for part and system design. Lower mass sound barrier materials can be applied in many cases without adverse effect on vehicle interior acoustical environment.
It is the role of the acoustical development engineer to understand the distinction between absorber and barrier, direct and reflected sound, and to select materials for a balanced, mass effective solution.
