A Framework for Evaluating Aftertreatment PM Control Strategies 2003-01-2306

Reducing particulate matter (PM) emissions from diesel engines has become increasingly important due to concerns over its health effects, especially those of ultra-fine particulates. Significant improvements in engine technology have dramatically reduced the engine-out PM levels for new diesel engines; however, regulations and health effects concerns motivate the development of post-combustion or aftertreatment control measures for in-use engines.
A number of retrofit aftertreatment technologies have been developed to reduce engine-out PM from diesel and other internal combustion engines. This paper offers a framework to evaluate technologies and a method to select the best option for a given application.
