Absorption Materials to Achieve Low Orifice Noise Level in Passenger Cars - Simulation and Experimental Results 2003-01-3537

During air intake system (AIS) design, reduction of orifice noise is an essential part in the development process. In this investigation, noise control solutions for AIS, such as Helmholtz resonator and the use of internal absorption materials, were compared.
Aiming to check beforehand the performance of the system, finite element method is employed to perform the acoustical analyses. In order to validate the numerical results, experimental investigations were carried out. Effects of geometry of the clean air duct and the use of absorption materials were analysed.
It is shown that simulation and experimental results are in good agreement and, the performance of the AIS regarding sound pressure level is improved creating many benefits for the whole project.
