Determining Loss of Control as a Means of Assessing ESC Effectiveness in Simulator Experiments 2006-01-1020

Deterministic identification of loss of control is required for quantifying the effectiveness of Electronic Stability Control (ESC) when performing controlled experiments in a simulated driving environment. This paper provides an overview of the issues involved in determining loss of control and presents an algorithm that detects loss of control based on vehicle slip, yaw, and yaw rate. The algorithm was tested in an ESC simulator study involving multiple loss-of-control scenarios.
