USILIGHT: A Cost-Effective Solution to Lighten Cars 2006-01-1216

Usilight (high stiffness sandwich steel sheet) is a steel-based high-tech product developed by Arcelor to reduce vehicle weight at an attractive cost.
The laminated steel structure of Usilight provides excellent geometrical stability, high flexural stiffness and adjustable dent resistance, as well as attractive sound damping and thermal insulation properties.
It can be transformed into automotive parts under industrial conditions with all forming techniques in the same way as current steels, mechanical assembly technologies, adhesive bonding, …, and the usual painting processes of car manufacturers.
High stiffness sandwich steel has already been validated for the main applications (hood, roof, some inner parts,), showing weight reductions of 20 to 40% with an attractive weight-saving cost.
