NiCd Battery Performance for Aircraft Applications 2006-01-3082

More power at a lower cost is a major driving force for the military and commercial aircraft industry and it has increased the demands for a more efficient aircraft power system. Electro Energy, Inc.'s nickel cadmium batteries have demonstrated high power capability and reliability in the field, while continuing to meet the tough pricing needs of today's military aircraft. The continued advancement of requirements has driven battery designs and configuration. The rugged plate construction of the Electro Energy, Inc. sintered electrode allows for high power density, long cycle life, and good low temperature performance. Nickel batteries continue to play a significant role in the aircraft battery industry, so it's important to review the benefits and look at efforts to maximize the overall performance.
This paper includes a review of data from the Electro Energy, Inc.'s current development initiatives for vented and low maintenance NiCd batteries. Data will be presented for the design and testing for contemporary battery programs such as the Apache and Cobra Helicopters. It will also include important information for use in selection of a NiCd battery for various applications. Additionally, historical data will be presented that will compare the benefits and drawbacks of various nickel cadmium batteries.
